An (n+1)-dimensional TQFT assigns a 2-category $A(Y)$ to a closed (n-2)-manifold $Y$, and it assigns a representation (as defined in the question) of $A(\partial W)$ to an (n-1)-manifold $W$. Gluing $W$ to itself along a pair of submanifolds of $\partial W$ corresponds to the 2-coend (or to the 2-end if one dualizes things). | |
