Mar 8, 2021 at 21:28 comment added Todd Trimble @user76284 I think you can take my "reportedly" as taking into account that possibility. Let that not deflect from the point being made here. (Edit: I even said "apocryphal". That should suffice for disclaimers.)

Jul 2, 2017 at 11:43 comment added Todd Trimble @TheMathemagician Paul never said anything was particularly wrong with "metaphysics"; if you read carefully you'll see his answers are more description than prescription. But let me put it another way. You may recall the apocryphal story about Laplace and Napoleon, where Napoleon had learned that no mention was ever made of God in Laplace's Celestial Mechanics. When Napoleon asked why not, Laplace reportedly replied, "Sire, I had no need of that hypothesis." Similarly, Paul is arguing there is no need of the hypothesis of infinite collections. You can still believe in them if you like.

Mar 23, 2011 at 16:38 comment added The Mathemagician What's wrong with metaphysics?Shouldn't you care what kinds of objects you accept as "real" in your discourse? This is part what always made me nuts when I was a philosophy student. To me,it's important to be clear what you're willing to accept as furniture in the world you live in and why.But I better stop before I get banned again........
