Jul 24, 2012 at 18:58 comment added Andreas Thom Fricke showed (I think) that every polynomial function on $SL_2 \times SL_2$ which is conjugation invariant, is a polynomial in $X,Y$ and $Z$ as above. This applies to traces of words. The question which such polynomials are coming from words in the free group is more complicated. I do not think that this subset is structured in any obvious way.
