It is maybe worth mentioning that for projective varieties, the full tensor product corresponds to the JOIN of X with another copy of itself after appropriate embeddings. Eisenbud's "Commutative Algebra: With a View Toward Algebraic Geometry" has a helpful discussion on page 304: books.google.ie/…
