I'm a research mathematician working in the placid city of La Serena, Chile ("La Serena" means "the serene one"). I like to learn new things in mathematics (this is job-related) and in other areas such as world history (this is a hobby). Albert Einstein once said that "imagination is more important than knowledge" (or words to that effect), but I could not disagree more with this view. In my opinion, a constant acquisition of new knowledge in one's area of research (and in related areas) is essential for fully expressing creativity and originality. Unfortunately, the prevailing emphasis on specialization in mathematics goes against this fundamental truth. But, on the other hand, no one is forcing you (or me) to follow the crowd...
