Answer to Q1 is Yes. A version of Tzafriri spaces (called Trilman spaces in Casazza-Shura's book) have subsymetric bases but do not even contain symmetric basic sequences. See impan.pl/pl/wydawnictwa/czasopisma-i-serie-wydawnicze/…
