I am a doctoral student in genetics and molecular biology with a focus on molecular evolution and phylogenetics. I have little formal training in mathematics (some classes from college and grad school). However, biology, and more specifically molecular biology are increasingly using mathematical thinking for data analysis and hypothesis testing, apart from the descriptive model that dominated the field some decades ago. You can think that in some years, mathematics will be for biology what it is for physics now.
