The smash product of pointed topological spaces is not associative, i.e., $(X \wedge Y)\wedge Z$ need not be homeomorphic to $X \wedge (Y \wedge Z)$. (It fails, for example, for $X = Y = \mathbb{Q}$ and $Z = \mathbb{N}$.)
