The Van der Waerden conjecture for the permanents was stated in 1926 and remained open for over 50 years. It was considered "one of the famous open problems in combinatorial theory" (in van Lint's words). It turned out to be an easy consequence of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality from late 1930s.
