I would like to know if practicing mathematics constitute of a hobby for some of you who are neither academics nor (advanced) mathematics is an important part of your career. How do you go and learn a new mathematical field on your own? Do you just pick up a book and go over all proofs and do all exercises on your own? Is there any technique would you like to share?
