My favourite is supposedly a joke made by a mathematician who was interviewing a not very good graduate student who was taking generals. The interview was going badly, so to make the student feel better the mathematician asked him for an example of a non-compact topological space. "The reals?" suggested the student, to which the mathematician replied, "Which topology were you taking?"
