How to write math
You can just type LaTeX formulas between dollar signs! There are still some bugs with the preview; see the FAQ and this meta.MO thread for details. Basic solution: if you're having problems with the preview (or the post looks wrong), put backticks around any math that contains underscores or asterisks. E.g. write `$f'_n=g_{n+1}$`.
Since jsMath does take some time to render mathematical markup (for some people it's quite slow), please consider using basic HTML and HTML symbols for simple formulas whenever possible, like
λ<sup>1</sup> ∉ ℤ<sub>p</sub>
to get λ1 ∉ ℤp.
