I recently passed my qualifying exam and for that I studied "Abstract Algebra" by Dummit and Foote. It was an interesting book which explains everything from basic with several interesting examples. The only thing is that it is some kind of encyclopedia so you should not cover everything for your studying; I believe that you should get the book and talk with a professor about the parts that could be helpful for you. |

I would suggest two things : 1. heading to J.S. Milne's site to answer the question ; 2. and closing that question since it's too elementary. |

Maybe for a first serious formal introduction to abstract algebra, you may start downloading the free book by Judson as I think it develops the theory essentials at the right pace and has easy and applied examples and exercises (with hints to solutions). |
