If anyone has seen "The Social Network" (reasonable probability) and understands math better than me (high probability), can you explain the Chess Player ranking algorithm referenced in the early part of the movie (used to build facemash.com). I believe the algorithm was to control for the probability that just because two players complete with a binary win or lose, the value of a win or loss is offset by their rank going into the match.

Haven't even heard of the movie, but does en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system help? – Willie Wong Oct 4 2010 at 18:11

Also, this question is probably more suited for math.stackexchange.com than MathOverflow. – Willie Wong Oct 4 2010 at 18:12
I think this is the algorithm referenced in the movie! And there is plethora of information (including clear examples) in that article to answer my question. Is there a place for this question on MO? If you want to re-post your finding as an answer I'll make this as closed and give you some MO points. – Jason Oct 4 2010 at 18:21
Another popular chess (et al.) rating system is the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glicko_rating_system (I believe we use it here in Australia), which is similar to Elo. – Douglas S. Stones Oct 4 2010 at 23:05
