I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this, but I'm gonna try. I would like to have those useful instantaneous links for propositions, definitions, etc. in the pdf file compiled from a tex file, so that if I quote Proposition 1.1, one can actually click in the pdf file on the "1.1" and get directed to the corresponding proposition. The same thing would be very useful for the index entries, etc. How can I do that? Thanks.

Hyperref. A good place to ask questions like this is the LaTeX forum at AoPS: www.artofproblemsolving.com (I also think you should have been able to find this using google.) – JBL Apr 18 2010 at 0:12

\usepackage{hyperref} and better pdfLaTeX your LaTeX file instead of producing an intermediate dvi. – Wadim Zudilin Apr 18 2010 at 0:40
