Hi all,

What is the significance of Gibbs and Jensen inequality in Information theory? How can it be used?

Thank you

Please check out the first two sections of the faq to see why this question does not belong on MO. In particular, it's not a question with a specific answer, and while I am sure it is interesting to some, it belongs more on a discussion forum or blog than here. – Harald Hanche-Olsen Feb 20 2010 at 16:00

I think that this could be made into an appropriate question, if the original poster could work out and give us a more specific subquestion. (This is where I saw it, this is what I already know about it, this is what I don't understand, etc.) – Yemon Choi Feb 20 2010 at 19:17

The problem is that this question is answered quite explicitly in any introductory course or text on information theory. What's the point of asking and answering such a question on Math Overflow? – Deane Yang Feb 20 2010 at 19:27

@Deane: Well, my hope was that the original poster could come back with a specific question that was worth answering (a point of confusion, or a technical detail). If none is forthcoming then I'll vote to close. – Yemon Choi Feb 20 2010 at 19:44
