I was wondering how it came about ? Who proposed it over the dinner table ? Was it supposed to replace the newsgroups way of asking questions ?

This is the canonical question that should be asked on the meta site! See meta.mathoverflow.net – Mariano Suárez-Alvarez Jan 28 2010 at 17:34

In any case, I have taken the liberty of asking it in meta. .. meta.mathoverflow.net/discussion/186/… .. – Anweshi Jan 28 2010 at 17:41

The FAQ states: "Math Overflow is not for questions about Math Overflow.". Now that Anweshi has ported it to meta, I vote to close. – Andrew Stacey Jan 28 2010 at 17:43

@origin: May I ask who you are originally? I mean, what is your main ID here? – Anweshi Jan 28 2010 at 18:01

@origin, you have now been suspended for a day. Please cool off. For future reference "you suck!", or any similar direct insults, are grounds for suspension. Civility is important here, as are following the community norms, which very strongly agree that this question belongs on meta, not here. – Scott Morrison Jan 28 2010 at 18:16
