Dear MO-fellows, Happy New Year !

Taking google as an example: https://www.google.com/zeitgeist/2012/

Why not to make a list of noted math events in 2012 ?

E.g. 15 December 2012 Museum of Math was opened in New-York (see also http://mathoverflow.net/questions/50343/what-would-you-want-to-see-at-the-museum-of-mathematics )

Mochizuki announced the proof of ABC conjecture. (see also http://mathoverflow.net/questions/106560/philosophy-behind-mochizukis-work-on-the-abc-conjecture )

I think Elsevier boycott should also be noted.

PS

Good luck, health and great achievements in new year !

I assume that submitting my M.Sc. thesis doesn't count as a notable event? :-) – Asaf Karagila Jan 1 at 10:15

"Why not to make a list of noted math events in 2012?" Because it off-topic for MO! [Good to have instant confirmation that from one year to the next really nothing much changed ;-)] – quid Jan 1 at 12:53

Alexander, you should start a blog. – Felipe Voloch Jan 1 at 13:16

I suggest creating MO II and leaving this one to those who clutter up the site with big lists. – Franz Lemmermeyer Jan 1 at 20:58

@Asaf Karagila: I hesitate a bit to take this to far off-topic, but AFAIK in Russia (for example) the situation is a bit different and so (locally) for Alexander Chervov the statement seems to make sense (see for example en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_worldwide under Russia). – quid Jan 2 at 11:25
