<p>Here is <a href="http://web.science.mq.edu.au/~mmccurdy/cms2010talk.pdf" rel="nofollow">a recent talk by Micah McCurdy</a> on how to extend string diagrams to express (monoidal) functors, and monads.</p> <p>Since monads and functors are ubiquitous in computer science (e.g. denotational semantics, functional programming etc.) McCurdy's work has immediate practical applications.</p>
